FAQs

Learning at Pathfinder is integrated and project-based rather than divided into separate subjects. Students explore math, science, history, language arts, and essential skills through long-term, interdisciplinary projects that connect directly to real-world challenges. This approach helps students understand how knowledge fits together and why it matters.
-
Yes. Students are challenged to think deeply, apply knowledge, analyze data, communicate clearly, and revise their work. Rather than memorizing information for tests, students demonstrate mastery through projects, discussions, and real-world applications—skills that prepare them for college, careers, and life beyond high school.

Raleigh is an extension of our classroom. Students learn through direct experiences—interviewing business owners, visiting government buildings, collaborating with local experts, and exploring community spaces. Our repurposed school bus allows us to bring learning into the world, making education active, relevant, and memorable.
-
Each day is flexible and responsive to student needs and project timelines. Some days are spent working collaboratively in our learning space; others take place out in the community—or a blend of both. Students may be working in groups, independently, or participating in guided discussions, with the educator facilitating, mentoring, and supporting learning throughout the day.
-
Students are known well at Pathfinder. We value effort, curiosity, and growth over perfection. Learning happens in a small-group environment where students are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and discover their strengths. Collaboration, discussion, and reflection are central to how students learn and support one another.
-
The educator serves as a guide, mentor, and learning architect—designing integrated experiences, supporting skill development, and helping students navigate challenges. High expectations are balanced with empathy, trust, and respect, creating a learning environment where students feel safe and motivated to grow.
-
Pathfinder is ideal for students who are curious, open to collaboration, and interested in learning through real-world experiences. Students who value flexibility, hands-on learning, and meaningful projects tend to thrive here.

This model may not be ideal for students who strongly prefer a traditional, rigid schedule, isolated subject instruction, or a conventional college-prep structure focused primarily on tests and grades.
-
Graduates leave Pathfinder confident in their direction, comfortable navigating unfamiliar situations, and equipped with problem-solving, collaboration, and self-advocacy skills. They understand that learning is a process and are prepared to adapt, grow, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
-
We value genuine partnerships with families. Parents are kept informed and involved, while trusting the educational expertise guiding the program. Open communication and collaborative problem-solving ensure each student is well supported.
